October is known for being a month filled with ghosts and goblins, but did you know October is also dedicated to something that can be as equally scary? This month we recognize National Cybersecurity Awareness Month, and to do our part we wanted to remind everyone about the importance of being safe and secure online. NCSAM 2019 is focusing on the message – Own IT. Secure IT. Protect IT. – and they have provided a toolkit to help you take proactive steps to increase your security at home and in the workplace.
What is Cybersecurity?
First of all, let’s start with the basics; What is cybersecurity? To keep it simple, it can be defined as the practice of protecting internet-connected systems from malicious attacks. The U.S. government spends billions of dollars each year on cybersecurity, but these threats are still on the rise. Meanwhile as technology advances so does the challenge of trying to protect it. With so much of our lives existing online, now more than ever, it is important to try and keep everything secure.
How does it apply to my Business?
Fighting cyber-crime can be expensive and time consuming. However that doesn’t mean it isn’t worth the effort. The National Computer Security Survey found that in 2005, 67% of businesses had discovered at least one form of cyber-crime. If that didn’t scare you enough, The National Cyber Security Alliance found that as many as 60% of hacked small and medium size businesses closed their doors within six months. These are just a few of the many statistics illustrating how important cybersecurity really is. That is why now, during Cybersecurity Awareness Month, it is a great time to review what proactive steps your business is taking to alleviate your risk.
