Aug 20 is National Radio Day, and we gather and celebrate the great invention of radio. Radio has been providing us with a great source of entertainment, news, and so much more since early 1900. As of today, radio has been with us for over 100 years.
The History
In the very beginning before radio was invented, not only one, but a joint of researcher and scientists contributed to the invention of radio altogether in the late 1800, each component used in radio, such as electric conduction, electromagnetic induction, or radio waves, was discovered through a long period time until the first radio was invented.
The Evolution
Although radio nowadays is used majorly for entertainment purposes, it was not the case in early days. In fact, radio’s first function was much more practical used for information transmission. First, the wireless radio served the military. Then it provided a regular public service role. It also served in emergency capacity. For instance, in 1912, the Titanic’s distress signal was broadcasted by a Marconi wireless.
Then comes the first commercial radio station, which was built in 1920, where listeners can tune in for news and world events. Starting that point, radio has officially entered our life. Radio ownership grew. From every two homes out of five owned a radio increased to every four out of five, it only took 7 years (1931 – 1938). By the end of 1999, the first satellite radio broadcast occurred.
Now we are 20 years into the millennium, instead of having a big chunk of machine, radio has been integrated into different technology; People can listen to radio in their car or just tuning in on their mobile devices. From when radios were first invented to today, it has changed drastically due to the technology found, and it will continue to evolve as more technology is devolved.
