World Television Day is on November 21. The United Nations in 1996 first declared that this day to be World TV day, and it has been observed every year since.
History of World Television Day
the world’s first electronic television was invented in 1927 by a 21-year-old inventor named Philo Taylor Farnsworth. Ever since then, TV has become the symbol of our time, one of the greatest inventions in human history to spread information around the world.
In December 1996, the United Nations General Assembly decided to name 21st of November the World Television Day, right after the first World TV Forum was held. UN leaders recognized that TV could bring attention to conflicts, raise awareness of threats to peace and security, and sharpen focus on social and economic issues. It was also acknowledged as a major tool in informing, channeling, and affecting public opinion, having an undoubtable presence and influence on world politics. Originally, this day was named by the UN, not to celebrate the television itself, but to recognize the impact television has for communication and globalization in today’s world.
There is no doubt that the invention of television was significant in the history. However, World Television Day is not meant to celebrate television itself, but rather of the impact it brings and the philosophy it represents – the openness and transparency of world issues.
We have to admit that the philosophy that television represents is now largely transformed into the internet. But on World Television Day, it is important for us to remember that television was there first and paved the way for what was to come.
